Polonnaruwa

Polonnaruwa

A visit to the ancient city of Polonnaruwa is a must – you can either walk through the ruins or even cycle along the way. It is advisable to visit the museum and visitor centre to truly appreciate the history and significance of the monuments of this ancient marvel.

Some of the main attractions in Polonnaruwa:

  • Vatagade: An elegant circular relic house lavished with moonstones and guard stones.
  • Lankatilaka Vihara: A gigantic intricate clay image house which preserves a colossal Buddha statue.
  • Gal Vihara: A rock temple featuring a group of Buddha statues carved into a large granite rock.
  • Rankoth Vihara: This is the largest and most impressive dagoba in Polonnaruwa.
  • Parakrama Samudraya: The largest ancient man-made irrigation reservoir implemented by Parakramabahu I which spreads over 2500 hectares.
  • Tivanka Pilimage: This building houses the remains of a Buddha statue built of brick and stucco, and has painted scenes on its walls that narrate the previous lives of Buddha.
  • Thuparama: This brick-built vaulted shrine is the oldest image house in Polonnaruwa, which once carried a Buddha statue.
  • Statue of King Parakramabahu: This is a striking rock carved statue which is believed to be that of the great King Parakramabahu, who was responsible for Polonnaruwa’s golden age.
  • Palace of King Parakramabahu: The Royal Citadel is enclosed by ramparts which houses several interesting monuments.
  • Atadage and Hatadage: These are two temples with embellished fine carvings built to house the sacred tooth relic during the 11th and 12th century.
  • Lotus Pond: This elegant pond was built in 12th century. This was made like a eight petaled lotus with four tiers and located in Gal Vihara complex.
  • Nissanka Latha Mandapaya: A unique structure in the ancient city of Polonnaruwa. Built by King Nissanka Malla (1187-1196) and named after him.
  • Council Chamber: Among the most noteworthy buildings in ancient Polonnaruwa was the Royal Palace of King Parakramabahu. The Palace must have been an imposing edifice, and the chronicles describe it as “seven stories high, furnished with a thousand chambers”.
  • Siva Devalaya: A Hindu Temple of chaste and restrained line dedicated to God Siva. This temple dates to the later Polonnaruwa period, and was probably built during a period of Indian domination in the thirteenth century.
  • Somawathiya: The Somawathiya Chaitya is a Buddhist Stupa situated in the ancient city of Polonnaruwa. The Somawathiya Chaitya is believed to have been built long before the time of Dutugamunu enshrining the right canine Relic of the tooth of the Buddha. It is attributed to the reign of King Kavan Tissa – Dutugemunu’s father – who ruled Magama. The stupa is named after Princess Somawathi, the sister of King Kavantissa, and the wife of regional ruler Prince Abhaya.

Climb the spectacular Sigiriya Rock Fortress – built in the 5th century by King Kashyapa – is one of the most stunning attractions of Sri Lanka. Consisting of over 1200 steps, Sigiriya is famous for its fascinating history, beautiful terraced gardens, the giant lion paws and exquisite frescoes of beautiful women midway, and the remains of an ancient palace on the summit of the impressive rock. Enjoy unforgettable views of the surrounding area from the top, which makes the 1.5 hour climb worthwhile.

Dambulla Cave Temple

Another must visit excursion is to Dambulla, is home to the largest cave temple in Sri Lanka that was built by King Valagamba in 1st century BC. With over 150 Buddha statues and beautifully painted inner walls spanning five caves, the Dambulla caves are a significant pilgrimage site in the island for over 2000 years. Situated close to the caves is Dambulla Golden Temple, which showcases a 100 ft gold plated Buddha statue.
