Polonnaruwa

Polonnaruwa was established as the second capital of Sri Lanka, after the decline of the first capital Anuradhapura in 993 by the invasion  of  Cholas, invading armies from South India.

Sinhalese sovereigns reclaimed the capital during the reign of King Vijayabahu I in 1070, and held on to rule for two centuries, during which time remarkable palaces, dagobas, temples, religious monuments, planned parks and artificial lakes were constructed, mainly by King Parakramabahu I in between 1153-86, as well as King Nissanka Malla from 1187-96. In 1982, UNESCO declared Polonnaruwa a World Heritage Site, and it is now one of the most anticipated cultural destinations of Sri Lanka. The compactness of this city ensures that all remains can be leisurely explored in one day.

Sigiriya Rock Fortress

Built during King Kashyapa’s reign (477 to 495 CE), Sigiriya rock fortress is Sri Lanka’s most visited historical site, and is considered by some to be the 8th wonder of the ancient world. This UNESCO World Heritage site is truly spectacular – it consists of an ancient palace on top of an impressive natural 180m rock. The rock has 1200 steps, and takes about 1.5 – 2 hours to climb through three levels – terraced gardens, moats and boulders on the bottom; the mirror wall, rock frescoes and Lion Gate midway; and the remains of the fortified 5th century palace on the summit. The view from the top of Sigiriya is simply phenomenal, where you can enjoy the symmetrical gardens below and uninterrupted views of the surrounding area.

Dambulla Cave Temple

Dambulla is renouned for its cave temple complex – a UNESCO World Heritage Site that was initially built in the 1st century BC by King Valagamba, who sought refuge in the caves earlier. Situated in a rock that towers 160 meters, the cave temple has been a pilgrimage site for over 22 centuries, with various kings renovating the caves. The highlight of the cave temple is 150 Buddha statues of various ages and sizes that span five main sanctuaries. The caves also have several stunning ancient murals carpeting the rock walls and ceilings, making it the largest antique painted surface in the world. Dambulla is also known for the Golden Temple, situated east of the cave temple, which has an appealing 100 foot gold plated Buddha carved in the Dhamma Chakka posture.
